Yellow Submarine sculpture,
Liverpool

Yesterday, Daisy learned about the Beatles. We were driving back from Yellow Sub (which is the name of the soft play), and she asked me why it was called Yellow Sub. So we talked about the Beatles, and the fact that they came from Liverpool, but were famous all over the world, and that one of their songs was about a Yellow Submarine. Then I had to sing it. Then I had to stop the car to look for the CD, so she could hear THEM singing it (she didn’t believe that it was as short as I’d made out, though it is). By then, we were nearly home, and the same CD played Penny Lane just as we turned the corner onto Penny Lane, so we talked about how they wrote a song about a road near our house – she knows where Penny Lane is, so she was quite impressed.

I love conversations like that. I love introducing her to a whole new world, which she may be only casually interested in, or she she may equally take it on as part of her identity. It’s all part of her becoming the person she’s going to be, and I find it fascinating.

The difference between this election and the last; the outcome wasn’t known before we all started. Last night was eurovision, a great way to confirm that the rest of Europe is bonkers, and nobody likes us (or is it our songs are never any good anymore?).

I’m quite disappointed Norway didn’t win, with WigWam, who are basically the Norwegian version of darkness, the probily lost out because of there lack of kettle drums. Ruth refused to believe that the Moldavian entry’s words “Granma Bangs the drum, with the big mallet from the house” didn’t have some other meaning, but they did have an old woman in a rocking chair with a drum, so I think that they are just bonkers.

granma nearly won

the only downside to eurovision is the voting now takes longer than the songs, I think 39 countries got to vote on the 24 songs. This does give Terry the opportunity to have ago at our European neighbours, which is all part of the fun. If we want people to get interested in Europe maybe we should let Terry have a weekly 30minute show where he rounds up the goings on and voting in the European parliament.

I don’t think we are ever going to win the contest again, since it went to ‘televoting’, all the Scandinavian countries vote for each other, all the Baltic countries vote for each other, and all the Balkan countries vote for each other, while if were lucky the Irish vote for us. (look at the voting)

I’m beginning to come around the to Tory view point, we need to let panels vote, because the common people can’t be trusted.

I know, some people will despair, that we let at 11 week old baby watch TV, but I am a great believer in all things in moderation, and besides she likes a bit of telly now and again.

So what does daisy like on TV, well she likes football; the other night when she was playing on her mat she stopped to watch the football, today she was fascinated by the Darkness, singin’ Christmas Time on VH1, and she does like the storymakers on cbeebies. All in all she doesn’t actually get put infront of the telly for very long, it’s just amazing how it can stop a full on tantrum, in it’s tracks, it’s scary stuff.

Today wasn’t to good for a monday, in fact it’s a bit of a prodigy day.

today, the OSS debacle continues (the rant post is still sitting on my laptop), today we had a meeting, or to be more precise I wasn’t in the meeting, to decide how the duplicate problem is going to be resolved. Given that oracle have said it’s our own fault (and to be honest it is) and that if we go into the database to fix it they won’t support us, oh and they won’t fix it for us, then we are a bit stuck.

anyway, I found a whole new set of duplicates today, not duplicate accounts, but duplicate enrollments, where a student is enrolled on the same modules over and over again, the first one I found was on 17 courses in oss, but really they should only be on 9, luckily all the stuff we have written to deal with modules, doesn’t accept duplicates because we thing you can only be on a course once, so we are just going to throw away all this information. This time, this one isn’t our problem, a piece of good news in an otherwise depressing day.
