I think there are as many ways to look at this issue as there are families! You had the 1st hand knowledge of growing up near a large family. We (5 siblings) were in the States, children of Irish immigrants-we had no relations for over 3000 miles. Puts a completely different perspective of knowing where you came from, and who your own relations are. Now I live here, my mom is 4,500 miles away--and my husbands family is up near you--so basically, my children are growing up without an extended family. Can be, from my experience, a lonely feeling in this rather big world. I do think knowing where you're 'from' is very important--make the effort,it's worth it!

I think you're missing the point. Public sector workers are WRONG to get 2%, they aren't worth it. Private sector workers are WRONG to get 3%, they are worth much more. See how it makes sense now?

The emphasis is that you are naive to expect 2% - why, even the PRIVATE sector are only getting 3%. That puts you almost level. Surely you don't think you're as good as that?

Nice post. I know what you mean. We just got together with my husband's sister and husband today. It's the first meet-up for months and we haven't ever seen their two grandchildren so we made a pact to do that.

Family is important, and it is important to keep in touch, even if only once a year because the years flash by and then there comes a time when it's too late. So start after Christmas and organise the next year knees-up, hire a hall, book a band. It might just be one of those occasions that sits in your memory forever, gleaming and glowing.

A Merry Christmas to you and yours.

I think it's best to follow her lead. As you said--every time you do sit down, you realize she's learned loads. And will continue to do so! Like you-I have no problem being the parent when it comes to manners & eating and all that--but I also love following their lead. Just keep up the 'oral' education as I call it. If you discuss things, they learn. If you play a game, they learn. If you read to them, they learn. They really truly just keep on learning! Relax, the reading is coming-and is probably far better than you even know. Give her time and she'll amaze you!

Ha that is my suspicion, many autonomous educators a so because their child will not have it any other way and they are not willing to destroy the relationship in the aim of control. The fact that for kids like that it works very well is the reward we get for listening to them.

There there, dear.

Problem arrived. Eventually, problem will go away. If you ignore it for long enough. Go and have a cup of tea, you'll be fine.

Somehow not seen your blog before, but 'hello'!

There's lots of us. I will leave the country before I let these petty bullies dictate who we are as parents, let alone compromise my child's welfare or education for the sake of box-ticking.

Stay strong. We can beat them.
